Useful contacts

Supporting the needs of someone with MND can be complex.

MND Victoria have an MND Advisor service available free of charge for all  those diagnosed with MND and their families in Victoria and Tasmania, if they choose to be part of this program.

MND Advisors provide information about the disease, offer advice and support. They make an initial assessment of specific service and support needs and provide ongoing support and advice to meet the individual’s changing circumstances.

Some of the support services you may wish to access include:
  • Your GP
  • MND Specialists
    • Neurologist
    • Speech Pathologist
    • Occupational Therapist
    • Physiotherapist
    • Dietician
    • Social Worker
  • MND Advisor
  • Counsellor
  • Pharmacist
  • Respiratory team
  • Complementary therapies (in conjunction with conventional medicine) to ease symptoms and reduce stress and anxiety (e.g. massage, acupuncture, reflexology)
  • Specialist palliative care

It’s a good idea to put together a list of key contacts and keep in a handy place (e.g., by the phone, on the fridge).

In an emergency, please dial 000.

Experiences

Lucy's experience

Lucy worries about who she can call on in an emergency as she has no close family living nearby. Her MND Advisor helps her put together a list of emergency contacts (e.g., palliative care nurse, HealthDirect, GP). She encourages her to use her local community (e.g. neighbours, members of her social groups) for non-emergency help.
