Emergency Preparedness

October 01, 2026

October to April is a high-risk weather season which means that bushfires, storms and heatwaves are more likely.

Now is the time to develop or update your Emergency & Disaster Management Plan as proactive planning can help ensure your safety and wellbeing.

People with progressive neurological conditions face unique challenges during emergencies, including mobility issues, reliance on medical equipment and communication difficulties.

Key Steps for Emergency Preparedness:
  • Create a Personalised Emergency Plan
    • Identify safe locations in your home for shelter, ideally away from windows and potential hazards.
    • Plan evacuation routes, and ensure they accommodate any mobility aids.
    • Discuss your plan with family members, caregivers, and neighbours.
  • Prepare an Emergency Kit
    • Include essential medications, medical supplies, important documents, and any necessary assistive devices.
    • Stock non-perishable food and water for at least 72 hours.
    • Don’t forget personal items like glasses and hearing aids.
  • Maintain Your Communication
    • Ensure your phone is charged and consider having a portable charger.
    • Share your emergency plan with caregivers, friends and family, so they know how to assist you.
    • Register for local emergency alerts to stay informed about weather conditions.
  • Stay Informed
    • Keep up to date with local weather forecasts and emergency services announcements.
    • Familiarise yourself with community resources, including shelters that are accessible to individuals with disabilities.
  • Regularly Review and Practice Your Plan
    • Revisit emergency plan and kit regularly, especially before the high-risk season.
    • Update contact information, supplies and any changes to your medical needs.
    • Conduct practice drills with your support system to ensure everyone knows their role.
