Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the heart of MND Victoria

MND Victoria was started in 1981 by a small group of people, some of whom were living with MND, their families, health/welfare staff, and other concerned people. This organisation was a completely volunteer-run organisation, so volunteers are truly at the heart of MND Victoria. Our vibrant and energetic volunteers contribute to the success of the Association and how we operate today.

Our volunteers bring a wealth of knowledge together with a wide range of skills and experiences to MND Victoria. Volunteers enhance the work of paid staff and help provide opportunities for improved quality of life for people living with MND and their families.

We invite you to find out more about how you can join our state-wide team of volunteers. With over 100 volunteers involved in a range of roles, you too can make a difference.

Whether you are interested in working with people living with motor neurone disease,  supporting family members and carers, if you are interested in raising awareness about MND, raising funds or sharing a special skill you can find a way to volunteer with MND Victoria.

MND Victoria works to identify volunteer roles that will suit each individual - their interests, skills, and availability. We are happy to talk with you to explore volunteer opportunities. Please fill in this Expression of Interest form to get started. Alternatively, you can call the Volunteer Engagement Team on 03 9830 2122 or email volunteer@mnd.org.au for more information.

Current volunteer opportunities

We are seeking to fill the following volunteer roles!

At MND Victoria, we rely on dedicated and compassionate volunteers to assist with many aspects of our operations - from lending a hand at one of our events to keeping connected with people living with MND.

Without the support of so many committed volunteers, we simply could not care for the hundreds of Victorians who are impacted by this disease.

MND Victoria Massage Volunteers make a physical connection with a person living with MND as they provide them with a gentle hand and foot massage. The personal connection is also an important part of this role as regular contact between our volunteer and the person they are supporting builds a much-appreciated opportunity to share time and sometimes stories as well as the benefits of the massage.

To become a Massage volunteer with MND Victoria you do not need to bring experience in massage – we will provide you with that training and ongoing support. Regular availability (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) is essential and an ability to travel to appointments in your local area.

We are currently seeking to build our team of Hand and Foot Massage Volunteers in multiple locations across Melbourne and some parts of regional Victoria.

If you would like more information about this role, please email volunteer@mnd.org.au or phone (03) 9830 2122.

We know the importance of ‘connection’ but that feelings of connection with community can be reduced through the impacts of MND. That’s where our Social Visiting and Social Chats Volunteers come in!

Currently, MND Victoria needs to grow our team of Social Visiting and Social Chat Volunteers. We service all of Melbourne and some parts of regional Victoria.

Social Visiting Volunteers visit clients in their home or residential care facility bringing companionship and social interaction. Regular visits might be for a couple of hours a week and are agreed upon by our volunteer and their client. Clients and their volunteers also determine how they will spend their time together – maybe chatting and sharing interests, playing cards, crosswords or crocheting. Maybe a walk to the local park or coffee shop or sitting quietly together and making a space for a carer to relax or to pop out and complete some errands.

Our Social Visiting Volunteers do not provide personal care activities for clients. They do not manage medication or do shopping or housework.

Social Chat Volunteers also help to keep people living with MND connected. The power of a regular call from one of our Social Chat Volunteers cannot be underestimated. Friendships are formed and common interests explored as clients and our volunteers make weekly or fortnightly calls up to an hour in length (but frequently far less). Our clients report having someone listen and offer support but without giving advice can be a welcome gift.

If you are interested in sharing time with others, are a good listener and would like to help people living with MND stay connected either of these roles may be a role for you.

MND Victoria provides training to prepare volunteers for these roles and also provides ongoing support for our volunteers along with opportunities to meet and share learnings with other volunteers.

If you would like more information on this role or are interested in applying to become a Social Visiting or Social Chats Volunteer, please email volunteer@mnd.org.au or phone (03) 9830 2122.

Join us to hear about the work of MND Victoria and opportunities for volunteering with us.

Stay tuned to find out when the next Information Session will be held.

Volunteer recruitment process

Our volunteer recruitment process aims to provide applicants with the information they need to find the right volunteer role for them. It also reflects the significance of our volunteers and ensures we meet our obligations in matching volunteers to roles within our organisation.

If you are interested in volunteering with MND Victoria, fill in this form or email volunteer@mnd.org.au to start to explore options.

The Volunteer Engagement Team will contact you to discuss volunteering with MND Victoria and an application pack will be sent to you.

When MND Victoria requires volunteers for specific roles, they will be advertised here and on our social media channels.

After you submit your volunteer application, the next step is an interview to explore available roles and find a role that matches your skills, experience and availability.

Prospective volunteers are required to complete a number of screening checks:

  • Referee checks
  • NDIS worker screening or police check (MND Victoria covers the cost of the required National Police Check).

If you have lived overseas for 12 months or more in the past 10 years an International Police Check is also required.

If your application is successful you will complete MND Victoria’s Volunteer Induction - introducing you to key information and policies to enable you to begin volunteering with MND Victoria with confidence.

Volunteer Induction is compulsory for all new volunteers, regardless of the program you are volunteering in.

You may also have additional training to prepare you for your specific role.

Other programs teach volunteers "on-the-job".

To keep volunteers informed and up to date MND Victoria asks all volunteers to attend at least one other training/meeting during the year.

Once all the above are complete, you will be welcomed to your role.

Volunteering expression of interest

To express your interest in any of the roles above or to find out more about volunteering with MND Victoria, please fill in this form. The Volunteer Engagement Team will be in contact with you. Alternatively, you can contact us below.
