Priority support for MND in the NDIS and Aged Care System

April 2026

MND Victoria welcome the Australian Government’s commitment to prioritise people living with MND in both the NDIS and Aged Care systems.

Learn more about these commitments below.

Support at Home

In November 2025, the Aged Care system was overhauled and a new Support at Home Program implemented. When accessing the Support at Home Program an initial assessment determinex a person’s eligible level of support (from levels 1-8) and their level of prioritisation to access that support (low, medium, high, or urgent).

We’ve seen wait times to access support range from 1.5 months (high) to 11 months (low).

The Australian Government has now announced that they will amend the Aged Care Rules to recognise the specific nature of MND, which means that people with MND will receive an urgent priority to access the Support at Home Program. This ensures that, after their assessment, people living with MND will get support within 1 month, under the urgent prioritisation.

This new prioritisation will also apply retrospectively to people who have already been assessed and are waiting for their Support at Home package.

The Aged Care Rules will be amended this week, with all people living with MND to be prioritised for urgent access to follow.

National Disability Insurance Scheme

At present, people living with MND who are eligible for and make an application with the NDIS are placed in an MND Priority Pathway. The MND Priority Pathway was set up in recognition of the specific nature of MND, with specifically trained planners  who have expertise in the needs and progression of the disease.

The Australian Government has made a firm commitment to the priority pathway being protected going forward.

MND Victoria, MND Australia, and the State Associations have been actively engaging with policy-makers to protect the NDIS priority pathway and improve the Aged Care System for people living with MND.

To the many people we support who have shared their stories with us, the media, and their local politicians: thank you. Each of these actions have contributed to this change.

We will continue advocating for all people living with MND to receive the best care possible.
