John had only recently been diagnosed with MND, and sadly, we had just one week with that diagnosis. That experience has made us realise just how important it is for the symptoms of MND to be recognised as early as possible, so that those affected — and their families and loved ones — can get answers, support and care sooner. Some symptoms to be aware of include: • Difficulty lifting or gripping objects, or opening jars • Trouble climbing stairs or walking • Rapid or unexplained loss of weight and muscle • Breathing difficulties • Changes in voice or speech • Difficulty chewing or swallowing, or excessive saliva • Muscle twitching or spasms • Tight or stiff joints If someone you love is experiencing any of these symptoms, please reach out to your doctor and seek medical advice. MND Victoria is the only not-for-profit organisation in Victoria dedicated to providing care and support services to people living with MND and their families.
