Advanced Practice Immersion Workshop

You're invited to be part of this special 'MND Exchange' event; a collaboration between Calvary Health Care Bethlehem and MND Victoria where we take a deep dive into the practicalities of supporting those living with MND, gaining advanced tips and hands-on experience from experts in the field.

This immersive workshop will equip allied health and nurse practitioners who already work in this space, to better manage the more complex challenges experienced by those living with MND, increase their awareness of the latest innovations, broaden their knowledge base and solidify their understanding of available supports and assistive technology.

Program Highlights
Introduction: Sector Insights and Research Developments

Broaden your organisational understanding of Calvary Health Care Bethlehem and MND Victoria, and their important roles in supporting and caring for those impacted by MND. We’ll explore the narrative behind the numbers and give a brief recap of the latest research developments in MND.”

Workshop 1: Exploring positioning, comfort and managing weakness for people living with MND

Explore the clinical reasoning and feature-matching though options and choices to better manage the impact of weakness, pain and spasticity. This session will explore impact of prolonged static positioning. Learn best practice techniques and seize the opportunity to explore and trial orthotics, cushions, head support strategies, wheelchairs, seating and other available assistive technology to support function and communication through optimal positioning and understanding of MND phenotype. The psychology and emotional impact on pain and discomfort will also be explored.

Workshop 2: Electronic Assistive Technology; exploring the choices and challenges for people living with MND

Enjoy a hands-on exploration of the latest in electronic assistive technology. Learn from expert therapists and suppliers about feature-matching to meet current and future needs of people living with MND including AAC, voice banking, message banking, alternate access, hardware and software. There will be the opportunity to drive a power wheelchair using eye gaze control and also see a range of bespoke 3D printed solutions that have been made for people living with MND. You’ll be inspired to ‘think outside the square’ using a range of electronic assistive technology to meet individual needs and goals for communication, computer access, environmental control and a range of other activities.

Facilitated Panel: Exploring the tough decisions faced by individuals and healthcare professionals impacted by MND 

This facilitated Q&A session will delve into some of the most challenging decisions faced by those affected by MND, while discussing proactive strategies with experts and individuals directly impacted by MND, who are best placed to share their valuable insights.
