In 2025, we are honoured that all funds raised from the 18th Superball will support a new service launching in 2026 for MND Victoria—a fully funded Genetic Counselling program. This initiative represents a critical step forward in the care and support provided to individuals and families impacted by motor neurone disease (MND).
The Genetic Counselling Program will provide specialised, tailored support for people living with MND and their families. With up to 15% of MND cases being familial, genetic counselling is critical—but current wait times of 6–9 months leave families without timely access to care.
Some reasons families will seek genetic testing are:
- to identify their risk of developing the disease
- to inform reproductive decisions
- to identify individuals eligible for specific treatments.
Genetic testing is currently available in Australia and may be funded through Medicare. This urgently needed service will improve early intervention, informed decision-making, and support for families facing MND.
